Saucony Endorphin Speed History: Six Generations Explained
CONFLUENCE RUNNING / SHOE HISTORY
2020 → 2026
The Saucony Endorphin Speed started a debate that has lasted through six generations: what should a fast training shoe feel like? Some runners want a light, lively shoe for workouts. Others want enough cushion and stability for long runs. The answer has changed as the family evolved.
What defines an Endorphin Speed?
The family uses a nylon plate, responsive cushioning and Saucony's SPEEDROLL geometry. These features position it between conventional daily trainers and dedicated carbon-plated racing shoes. A nylon plate is not a guarantee of flexibility or a suitable fit: the entire midsole and shoe geometry determine how it feels.
Six generations, six chapters
GENERATION 01
Endorphin Speed 1: the original formula
Introduced in 2020, the first generation paired Saucony's PWRRUN PB cushioning with a nylon plate and SPEEDROLL design. It helped make a plated shoe an option for more than one workout per week. The exact early-model fit and specifications differ from later generations.
GENERATION 02
Endorphin Speed 2: the one runners kept looking for
Speed 2 refined the original formula. One runner described retiring their Speed 2 after over 660 km, having used it for a first marathon and personal bests. They also reported the foam feeling flatter toward retirement. This is a first-person historical runner report, not a tested product lifespan or a story about Speed 6.
GENERATION 03
Endorphin Speed 3: a change in feel
Speed 3 earned followers who appreciated a steadier and more accommodating ride, while some earlier-generation fans preferred the livelier feel of versions 1 and 2. These are preferences shared in independent running-shoe discussions, not an objective ranking.
GENERATION 04
Endorphin Speed 4: a different balance
The Speed 4 brought another fit and ride change. Some runners liked its sharper response, while others preferred the forefoot feel of older generations. Fit, volume and rocker position matter more than the generation number alone.
GENERATION 05
Endorphin Speed 5: the benchmark
Speed 5 uses PWRRUN PB foam and a nylon plate, with published stack figures of 36 mm heel and 28 mm forefoot and an 8 mm drop. A runner who retired a Speed 5 after 446 miles reported using it for tempos, progressions, long runs and races. That is a personal account, not a universal durability estimate.
GENERATION 06
Endorphin Speed 6: a new foam and plate
Saucony introduced the Speed 6 on October 15, 2026, with new PWRRUN PBX beaded PEBA-based cushioning, a redesigned nylon plate and updated SPEEDROLL geometry. Saucony says it adds 2 mm underfoot. Independent testers at Doctors of Running report a 38 mm heel / 30 mm forefoot stack, 8 mm drop, and a responsive rolling feel, while noting differences in fit and perceived stiffness between testers.

Neither version is automatically the right answer. Compare heel hold, midfoot pressure, toe room, easy-pace comfort and faster-pace transitions in the actual size you need.
How is Speed different from Pro and Elite?
The Endorphin Speed focuses on a versatile nylon-plated workout and race-day role. Endorphin Pro models emphasize carbon-plated road racing. Endorphin Elite serves a more specialized premium racing role. These are different purposes, not a simple good-better-best ladder.
