July 12th, 2019 - (BINGHAMTON, NY) - The Sunset Runway 5K is a fun evening for everyone. It is hosted by the Broome County Department of Aviation and presented by the Greater Binghamton Airport and Broome County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Services. the run takes place on the Greater Binghamton Airport tarmac which has a beautiful view of Broome County and the Greater Binghamton Valley.
Broome County Executive, Jason Garnar, helped support the Sunset Runway 5k three years ago. Jason spoke about how the evening event is a family friendly night out. There is something for everyone. The Broome County community can run, walk, spectate, or even volunteer.
According to the Run Sign Up registration, 25% of the participants come from outside of Broome County. This includes surrounding counties such as Tioga & Cortland Counties, but also outside of New York State such as Stafford County Virginia & Bradford County Pennsylvania.
This is the third year running for the Sunset Runway 5K, which will be on for July 18th, 2019, and the event has already surpassed it's participation from last year. A total of 134 participants ran in 2018. Registration will continue until race day, which will be at Hanger 2 with the race beginning at 7:30pm. Unlike last year, the race has been certified by USA Track and Field and is now an official 5K event. The race has hired Gazelle Race Timing of the Vestal Coal House.
Broome County Deputy Commissioner of Aviation Mark Heefner said that regardless of one’s level of running experience, the Sunset Runway 5K is an evening of fun, excitement, and wonderful views. All participants who signed up by the deadline will receive a t-shirt, as well a beer (over 21 years of age).
About the Sunset Runway 5k
The Sunset Runway 5k brings notice to the Greater Binghamton Airport. This race starts at 7:30. Participants run on the Runway Tarmac where runners and walkers will see a wonderful view of the Sunset over Broome County's contours. Race Timing, Music, and Beer included in the race experience. Runners and walkers get to run on Runway 16/34 and Runway 10/28.
