More Than Miles: 2026 Meals on Wheels 5K Results & Photos
2026 race results, photos & community highlights | October 3, 2026 | Otsiningo Park, Binghamton, NY
Some races are about chasing a personal best. Others are about getting outside, enjoying the morning, and sharing a few miles with friends. And then there are races that remind us why running communities matter in the first place.
On Saturday, October 3, runners and walkers gathered at Otsiningo Park for the 2026 Michael French Memorial Meals on Wheels of Western Broome 5K Run/Walk. It was a morning of racing, remembering, and supporting a local organization whose work reaches far beyond the finish line.
Remembering Michael French
Michael French was much more than a name on a race shirt. He was an accomplished runner, a longtime Meals on Wheels volunteer, and one of the people who helped get this community 5K started. Meals on Wheels of Western Broome remembered him as a kind and compassionate friend who cared deeply about its mission.
Michael passed away in late 2021 after a long battle with cancer. In 2022, the organization renamed its 5K in his honor. Each year since, participants have helped carry forward a legacy built on showing up for other people.
2026 Race Highlights: Fast Times and a Welcoming Field
The certified 5K brought 62 recorded finishers across the line, compared with 58 the previous year. Up front, the pace was decidedly quick.
Steve Esposito won in 16:46.77, followed by Declan Giannone in 17:02.82 and Eric DeHart in 17:06.94. David Ducic (17:29.52) and Alex Craver (17:35.20) completed the top five.
Among the women, Sara Korba led in 23:15.61, followed closely by Kathy Purtell (23:19.21) and Beth Rubin (24:38.53). Congratulations to every runner who chased a time, returned to racing, or simply made it to the start line.
There was room for more than one kind of race-day goal, too. Walkers could choose shorter turnaround distances, and the event also included a free kids' run. That's a big part of what makes a community event feel like a community event: not everybody needs a stopwatch to belong.
Why These Miles Matter
The race supports Meals on Wheels of Western Broome, which provides meals and human connection to neighbors in our community. The event organizer states that the proceeds from the 5K benefit the organization.
A good race morning lasts a few hours. The work of preparing meals, delivering them, checking in on people, and making sure they feel remembered continues all year. That's the bigger finish line behind this event.

Keeping Michael's Legacy Moving
We love a good finishing kick. But Michael French's story is also a reminder that the miles we share with others can matter more than our splits. Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, supporters, runners, walkers, and families who gave this event its purpose.
