Read battery modes carefully. Garmin GPS-only values and COROS All Systems or Standard GPS values use different satellite settings. The cross-brand bar chart above instead compares supported high-accuracy dual-frequency modes. Turn-by-turn navigation and full downloaded maps are different features. COROS PACE 4 gained global maps in a September 2026 software release.

What does each training platform give a coach?

Garmin Connect + Garmin Coach

Planning: Garmin Coach plans, structured running workouts and calendar syncing on compatible Forerunners.

Analysis: VO₂ max and session data on entry models; advanced Forerunners add Training Status, acute load, HRV Status and Training Readiness.

Working with your coach: use recorded data or connected training services to review workouts. Some third-party plan syncing depends on app integration.

See our step-by-step Garmin workout tutorial

COROS Training Hub + EvoLab

Planning: workout builder, libraries, calendars and shareable plans.

Analysis: Running Fitness, intensity zones, training load, fitness, fatigue, recovery and detailed workout charts.

Working with your coach: approved coaches gain team and athlete views and can assign plans and workouts through Training Hub.

See COROS coach and athlete workflows
Practical differences: Choose Garmin Forerunner 265 or newer performance models when you want Garmin Training Readiness. Choose the 965 or 970 for Garmin onboard maps. The Forerunner 570 provides advanced training scores but not onboard maps. COROS PACE 4 and PACE Pro both have downloadable maps as of October 2026; PACE Pro provides a larger screen. For the longest high-accuracy GPS rating among this selection, COROS lists VERTIX 2S at 43 hours.

How to narrow it down

Your first watch

Compare screen visibility, comfort, setup and everyday running basics. See the Garmin Forerunner 165, Garmin Forerunner 55 and COROS PACE 4.

Marathon training

Choose how you want to set workouts and review training. The watch's coaching tools, your own coach and your preferred apps matter more than an isolated score.

Mountain and trail

Verify route maps versus turn guidance, battery modes, display visibility and watch weight before choosing a premium outdoor model.

Garmin Coach versus COROS Training Hub

Garmin Run Coach offers adaptive plans through Garmin Connect on compatible devices. A runner sets a goal and training availability, and the plan adjusts to recent performance and health metrics. Garmin also offers expert-coach plans and prebuilt plans with different options.

COROS Training Hub lets athletes review fitness and training load, build plans and workouts, and share data with a coach. Its coach-specific team features require coach access. The exact watch and app features still need checking.

Neither service replaces good coaching judgment. Use a watch to monitor consistency and execution while considering athlete-reported fatigue, injuries, schedule and goals.

Common comparison questions

Does one brand always have better battery life?

Compare exact modes. In dual-frequency GPS, Garmin Forerunner 970 lists up to 21 hours and COROS PACE 4 lists up to 31 hours. COROS VERTIX 2S lists up to 43 hours. The model battery charts show ten watches and explain how test settings differ.

Do both brands support structured workouts?

Yes, on supported models. Garmin uses Garmin Connect and associated plans; COROS offers app-based workouts and Training Hub. Verify device and activity compatibility.

Do I need maps for marathon training?

Usually not for a familiar road course. Onboard maps are more useful for exploring unfamiliar routes, trails and travel destinations.

Should I buy an older discounted model?

Compare its remaining software support, specifications, sensor generation, current price and warranty before making a decision. An older model can still suit the task, but do not assume it matches a newer model's features.
