Five buying questions worth answering

  1. What is your main sport? Daily running, road racing, trail running, swimming and triathlon place different demands on a watch.
  2. Which data will you use? Pace, laps and heart rate are enough for many runners. Training load and recovery estimates help if you understand their limits.
  3. Do you need maps? Breadcrumb guidance and full onboard maps are different navigation features.
  4. How does it fit? Compare wrist circumference, case diameter, weight, display and band comfort.
  5. Will you use music, phone features or long GPS sessions? Verify connectivity, battery and subscription requirements on the exact device.

Use your Garmin as a training tool

1. Build a plan

Choose a race or training goal in Garmin Connect or work with a coach to define weekly volume, key workouts and easy days.

2. Execute workouts

Set heart-rate or pace targets where appropriate, sync supported workouts and use lap data to keep track of the actual session.

3. Review the trend

Compare training load, effort, consistency and recovery over several days or weeks. Do not redesign a program because of one low score.

Read the Garmin training metrics and coaching guide for a detailed explanation of the numbers.

Buying a Garmin as a gift?

A first-time runner, a marathoner and an outdoor adventurer usually want different features. Start with their training, their preferred case size and whether they already own a watch.

How we recommend watches: Match the device to your training habits and the features you will use. Garmin's performance and recovery scores are estimates and do not replace how you feel or advice from your coach or clinician.
