Race-week principle

Protect the fitness you already earned.

This is not a list of things every runner needs to buy. It is a problem-solving guide for Wineglass week: identify the friction points you have already experienced in training, then make sure your proven solution is packed, fitted and ready.

01 · Fuel

Fuel before you feel empty

Know your breakfast, your race fuel, your timing, and how you will carry it. Stick with products and quantities you have practiced.

02 · Hydration

Know your hydration plan

Decide whether you are relying on the course, carrying fluid, or combining both. If you carry a vest or handheld, make sure it has already passed a long-run test for bounce and chafing.

03 · Shoes

Proven beats exciting

Race shoes should already feel familiar at race pace and with your race socks. Check heel security and lacing now—not Sunday morning.

04 · Feet

Socks, laces & blister prevention

A small hot spot becomes a very large issue over 13.1 or 26.2 miles. Use technical socks you trust, trim toenails, secure your laces, and prepare your normal blister strategy if you use one.

05 · Friction

Chafing: prevent it before it starts

Think through inner thighs, underarms, bra band, nipples, waistband, neck and hydration-vest contact points. Use the anti-chafe routine you have already tested.

06 · Apparel

Bras and apparel are race equipment

The right apparel should disappear once you start running. Check seams, support, waistband, pockets, fabric when wet, and whether the outfit still feels right after hours—not minutes.

Runner racing in cool wet conditions during the 2018 Wineglass Marathon in Corning, New York
Race-day gear has to work after the weather, sweat and miles show up.

07 · Conditions

Weather options

Have choices ready for cool, warm, wet and windy conditions: throwaway layer, gloves or sleeves if practiced, hat/visor, sunglasses, sunscreen, and dry post-race clothing. Make the final call from the short-range forecast.

Headwear →   ·   Sunglasses →

08 · Finish

After the finish

Put dry clothing and comfortable footwear in your approved gear-check bag. Future You will appreciate it.

Do not turn a deal into a race-day experiment. A familiar model or duplicate race shoe may make sense; otherwise think next training pair, backup pair, or recovery/everyday mileage.

Need another set of eyes?

Confluence Running will be at the 2026 Wineglass Health & Fitness Expo at the Corning Museum of Glass on Friday, October 2 and Saturday, October 3. Bring the shoes, socks, lacing issue, nutrition question, hydration setup or apparel concern. We would rather solve a small problem before the race.
